Call Before You Haul

A program initiated by the Pacific States Marine Fishieries Commission (PSMFC)

The Call Before You Haul program was created to help prevent delays during the transport of watercraft to the states of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. In addition, this program helps ensure that boat transporters will not violate state or federal laws pertaining to the unlawful transport of aquatic invasive species.

BOAT TRANSPORTERS: Call 1-844-311-4873 to receive information which will facilitate and expedite the inspection and, if necessary, decontamination of the watercraft being transported. Taking this step can prevent costly and timely delays.

IT’S THE LAW: Under the Lacey Act, a United States federal law, it is illegal to transport invasive species into the U.S. or across state or international borders. Additionally, western states have enacted their own laws to minimize the spread of aquatic invasive species. Transporting watercraft with invasive species into and through western states may result in fines and significant delays.

When you are preparing to transport a boat, Always remember to:

  1. CLEAN: Remove all plants, animals and debris from the watercraft. Thoroughly clean everywhere, including the plumbing!

  2. DRAIN: Ensure that all water has drained from the vessel, including from the ballast tanks, wells, and engine. If water remains, it could be expelled into the next waterbody!

  3. DRY: Dry pools of water that are leftover using towels or sponges. Any residual water has the potential to transport aquatic invasive species!

  4. CONTACT: Always contact your destination state, and understand the laws and regulations regarding boats crossing state boundaries. Call 1-844-311-4873 if you are transporting a boat to Washington, Oregon, Idaho, or Montana!
